Sapphire is colourful commonly recognised as blue in colour however, blue sapphires can range from a dark blue and deep royal blue to a bright corn flower blue. They can be found in an array of other colours from yellow, green, pink, purple, and the rare orange-pink sapphire known as “Padparadschah”.

Sapphire is unique as it is a variety of the mineral corundum. Other trace elements in the corundum ultimately affect the resulting colour of the Sapphire. To obtain a blue Sapphire, both iron and titanium need to be present.

Sapphire is durable on the Moh’s scale of hardness ranging from 1-10, Sapphires are measured as 9, making it a very appropriate choice of gem for use in jewellery.

Sapphire is universal and is mined in many different places around the world including Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and Australia.
